Hi, Greg
Thanks for the U2 concert info. Do you know how much the Golden Circle tickets for the Jhb concert are expected to cost?
Thanks
Hi Lloyd
Trying to get a little more detail into ticket pricing in the various categories as we speak. I'll update here as soon as I get any more info.
Hi Greg
Perhaps you can help me, I was wondering if one needs special permission to take a camera into the venue. Whats the vibe around this, would love to snap a couple shots. Soccer city here we come.
Hey Edmun
Indeed you will be able to take a camera with you to the concert. BUT, it needs to be a small point-and-click type camera or a cell phone camera.
Anything more advanced will not be allowed in. Even a semi-professional DSLR with a small detachable lens will be barred. Also, no video cameras of any size or sort are permitted at all.
Check back here in an hour or so – I have a link to a graphic which clarifies the level of camera that will be allowed in…

Hi again Lloyd
Just heard that Golden Circle/Red Zone tickets for Joburg will be priced at R2568.00 (this is 90% solid info, but still needs independent confirmation.)
Holy Mackerel!!! I guess that I won't be in the Golden Circle then. But thanks so much for all your help.
Cheers
My thoughts exactly Lloyd!
Here's the sales pitch:
The Red Zone (Golden Circle) tickets will be the inner circle standing.
With these Red Zone tickets you also get the following:
- The only reserved General Admission VIP standing area nearest the stage
- Entry to the Stadium through an assigned VIP entrance/gate
- Avoiding lines and still be beside the stage; regardless of your arrival time
If they tossed in stadium parking, a stage tour, autographed copy of the the concert DVD, t-shirts and posters, and a unlimited bar in a hospitality suite I might have considered it…

Hi Greg, how sure are you about those extras on top of the Inner Circle tickets? It sounds great!!
Hi Lizelle. Not sure if you misread my reply comment earlier…
Red Zone tickets include ONLY access to the inner circle area for close to stage standing and a dedicated VIP stadium entrance gate.
I said that IF they had included all the other things in my WISHlist it might be worth it, but without all the extras I for one can't see myself throwing R2500+ per person at a Golden Circle ticket.
LOL!! Aaah damn…you had me excited there for a minute!! Thanks for correcting me!!
Probably not the first time a woman's said those words to Greg… "You had me excited. For a minute."
One minute is all they get………

…
There is a difference between the red zone and inner circle tickets. Red zone tickets are tickets for a dedicated red zone outside of the stage circle, but next to the stage.
Inner Circle tickets are tickets provided to the first (read sleep over) general admission tickets. These are for a standing area between the stage and the b stage (outer circle). Have a look at Bigconcerts.co.za for further info.
Thanks for this note Flip – much appreciated. I think we have pretty much covered the Inner Circle/Outer Ring/RedZone areas in the comments on the next post in this U2 Tour series as well: http://bit.ly/aoMZC9
Oh dear. Computicket site already showing signs of struggling: "Please try again later or contact our Call Centre on 083 915 8000 (calls charged from R2.85 per minute) or 011 340 8000 or visit any of the Computicket Stores."
702 also reporting the fans have been queuing for tickets at outlets all over the place since the early hours. Website not happy!
Computicket fail!!

Why isnt U2 coming to durban?????????

Thats not fair
It’s been a bit of a talking point, this one.
There are those that feel there’s not enough big show interest from Durbanites with big ticket shows in the past not doing so well there. Could Durban put together 70,000-odd to fill Moses Mabida I wonder?
As it is, I know a lot of folk from KZN, FS, MP, etc. provinces are travelling to Jozi for the concert here. And that it is not yet sold out. (CTown is but not Jhb) All of Gauteng, and a bunch of visitors from out of town and we still can’t fill the FNB stadium. What chances of just Durban doing the same down there?
Hi
I am from Mauritius and dying to see U2 live…i”ve tried the computicket website but all the prices i try keeps saying that the performance is sold out…can you help?? please i really need to get a ticket!
Thanks….Valerie
Hi Valerie
From what we understand, the Cape Town concert is entirely sold out, so if that’s the one you’re trying to get tickets for you’re out of luck. For the concert in Joburg there are only a small amount of seated tickets still available. General Admission Standing tickets are sold out entirely.
When trying to make your purchase on the Computicket site, (go here: http://www.computicket.com/web/event/u2_360_tour/253578152/118089467/ ) click on the “launch detailed floor plan” link below the small image of the stadium seating plan, select any one of the seated areas on the interactive plan, submit the request and the system should return the best available seats.
Let us know if you get sorted! Good luck & see you at the show
Hey Rowan – and Greg
About U2 and Durban – it is about time that Big Concerts and their merry marketing folk (and many radio stations) realised that Durban does have people! Joburg has about 3,9m excluding surrounding cities (total about 9m), CT has about 3.4m – and Durban has about 3.4m. If CT can be sold out before Gauteng – then – why is there an assumption that Durban cannot be sold out? I think the marketing research “experts” have it totally wrong when it comes to segmenting the Durban market. This is why we don’t have a radio station that caters predominantly for rock music and why we get the old has been bands sent to this part of the world – and why it is so difficult to get people to attend concerts and (not) listen to pathetic radio stations. Send us a real band for once and we will have a concert experience that nobody can rival in SA!
Also, why do we have to have the concert in Moses Mabhida just because it seats 70,000 when we have the rugby stadium next door that seats 50,000 – if this aim is to fill it up – but, I am sure the aim is to make money, right? Besides, get real – this is February we are talking about. All the varsity students from all over the place will be back in Durban by mid-Feb and most teenagers from about the age of 16 will want to attend – probably with their parents too! Jo’burg (and other) people who could not get seats for Jo’burg or CT concert can come to Durban – and have a great time enjoying the rest of the outdoor attractions! I say we move for a 3rd concert to cater for the rest of the national/Southern African demand to see U2 live. By the way – this is the same story that we had for 30 Sec’s to Mars. Big Concerts and their marketing strategists need to stop perpetuating the misconcpetions that they are living under – if you can, tell them to wake up please.
Marcel puts forward a very strong arguement in Durbans’ favour for a 3rd show – if such is added to the tour. The recent announcement of additional blocks being added to the Cape Town Stadium for the show there indicates that there is still interest in U2 tickets, but the continued lack of the “Sold Out” signs in Jozi will hamper any addition of a 3rd show anywhere.
Marcel, while I certainly can’t speak for Big Concerts in their general approach to Durban performances (or more specifically in this case, Live Nation Touring – the management company handling the u2 tour) I personally think that the decision not to bring 360 Degrees to Durban is probably primarily a financial one. Daily costs of the production are approximately $750,000, not including the stage construction; the majority of this comes from truck rentals, transportation, and staff wages. Add to that another $250,000 – $500,000 per -day for stage construction, venue rental, insurance cover, accommodation and meals, corporate hospitality and a variety of other expenses and you’re looking at $1.25 million odd in costs PER DAY.
At a minimum of 4 days per venue (it takes three days to set up one of the 3 stages that leapfrog from venue to venue and a day to breakdown) at we’re looking at least $4-5 million to put on a performance of the show. Let’s call it a conservative R35-million. And that’s just to break-even for one show, never mind actually make any profit. They still have to pay off $100-million odd cost of the three sets for example. After the 44 shows in the first two tour legs, the tour had grossed over $300-million but had yet to break-even.
Not being all that familiar with the Durban music supporter scene I can only imagine that the decision not to visit the sunshine city is based on sound thinking by the promoters, both local and international. That said though, your point of why not use a smaller stadium is valid enough on the surface.
I’m also a little intrigued as to what the fact that Durban did not get a 30STM show, won’t be getting a U2 show (or a Roxette show I’ve just seen), but is getting a Duran Duran show and a Neil Diamond show says about the image that the Durban music loving public has…
cause the rugby stadiums tatty , falling apart and a complete eye sore next to the moses mabidha
Greg,
Thanks for this useful info on the costing. Very simplistically, R500 x 70,000 = R35m. I am sure that you could probably sell U2 tickets at R600 a pop in Durban and fill the stadium, so, it is potentially financially feasible if we can get 60,000 or so seats sold at that price.
On the music following/tastes of Durban based people, I am still surprised how we do not have a radio station that caters for the needs of music lovers who simply like to listen to rock music – all of the time. What we have instead, is a station that plays pop music that is two decades old! Granted, there is a market for that genre, but, there is a massive gap in the market that is not catering for the U2 type music lover. I think the guys at 94.7 are on the right track, but, we can’t get their signal locally!
So, it becomes a self-fullfilling situation where decisions are probably made by promoters based on what seems to be the preferred music genre for this part of the world – because there is only East Coast radio listenership to guage from, therefore, everyone in Durban is like the typical East Coast listener!
Another very important point is that when we do actually are graced with the presence of the types of bands that Durbanites supposedly prefer, it is often in the middle of the week when most people do not really want to go out.
Regardless of these challenges for Durbanites, even if it takes another 10 years for promoters to wake up to the realities of Durban tastes, surely we can leverage technology like was done for the soccer world cup and join into the concerts – live – at a concert venue! This could add significant profit to the U2/other big name tours. So, hire out a (rugby?) stadium, put up a big screen and some good sound, sell lots of beer and food and let everyone have a party with the folk in CT or Jhb. This, I believe is highly feasible and is something that MUST be considered for “Disadvanted U2 Fans” in the larger cities – Durban, Pretoria, Bloem, PE, EL to mention a few.
So, why don’t the promoters set a challenge for RSA – if the Jhb tickets are sold out, they will put on live video streams to the major cities. Even get the cell phone companies involved and let them stream it over the cell networks too… just to test out that wonderful live video technology they have been punting. We are almost in 2011, so, let’s use the technology we have to our advantage and make this wonderful event accessible to more people.
Marcel I think that you have made a brilliant suggestion! The WC stadiums were all equipped to live broadcast standards – yay for Telkom! – and we certainly have the technology in place from then to stream a live show from one pint to another I’d imagine.
And doing something like this would possibly go a long way to proving your point as to whether Durban (and the other centres you mention) do in fact have a rock music audience or not. Certainly, if enough Durbanites paid to watch a concert on a big screen, the promoters would rethink their opinion of the numbers that would pay to see the real thing.
Alternatively, it could land up being a poorly supported event, in which case you’d have hammered a final nail into the coffin and ended all future discussion on the topic.
Either way, it could well be an affordable financial risk, and possibly even pave the way for future concert performance events. And U2 might very well be the band to test the market. They are probably the most innovative and technologically savvy touring acts there is.
All we can do is make the suggestion, and let’s see what comes out of it. I’m off to drop a note to Big Concerts asking them to check your suggestion out…

Hi All,
I just realized that my girlfriend and I will be traveling from the US to Cape Town during the week of the concert. I would love to surprise her with tickets to the show. I know the tickets are sold out but I was hoping someone can give me advice on legit ticket brokers in Cape Town/South Africa. In the US I would immediately go look at EBay and Craigslist and Ticketmaster, but I’m just not comfortable using any of the services in another country without a recommendation.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
Matin
Hi Matin
Officially there is no legitimate after-market ticket sale service in South Africa. In fact, the local concert organisers have indicated that they will blacklist tickets that they discover have been purchased outside of the official channels. Whether (or how) they’ll follow through on this I’m not certain, but be aware of it at the very least. I would also be very skeptical of picking up tickets from auction sites and classifieds sites – sites like gumtree.co.za and junkmail.co.za. You have not protection should anything go wrong with a transaction initiated through those means.
Fortunately for you – if you act quickly – an additional number of seated blocks were recently added to the U2 Cape Town concert performance. The seats are high up and to the side of the stadium, but are reasonably priced (about US$110) and are avaialble from the official SA ticket sales outlet – Computicket. Follow this link: http://www.computicket.com/web/event/u2_360_tour/253578152/0/19999257 and get your girlfriend the ultimate surprise gift now!
Let us know if you get sorted, and we’ll look out for you in Cape Town in February.

E-mail the ticket provider with your order number for information. The last information I had is that tickets will be posted from the States in the second week of January.

Hey!
Does anyone know where to purchase U2 T-shirts in Durban????
Not sure if of any legitimate sales outlets in Durban at all Dhiya, sorry. You could try the bigger music outlets perhaps? Maybe at a Musica store.
If you want genuine U2 merchandise you could also try online at the official U2.com web store. They have T-shirts priced from around R140 – R210 for sale there. At least you know you’ll be getting the real thing. Go here: http://bit.ly/fezNlh

What will the parking (park / ride?) arrangements be for the concert at Soccer City the 13th? Will it be the same as for the Soccer World Cup? Where can I obtain information regaring this?
Hi Annemé (excellent name!)
Big Concerts have promised that they will be releasing information regarding transport and parking sometime next week. We’ll carry this information here as soon as we get it.
U2 360° South Africa Concert Parking & Transport Plans
In the meantime though, park-and-walk options for FNB stadium are already available for purchase through Computicket. Check that post for the prices and details.
Yep – I am also keen to know more about various transport options. Is the train an option, like the World Cup? Or Park and Ride? Thanks so much! Can’t wait!
Hi Lise
Your wish, our command… U2 Concert Parking & Transport Plans!!
It looks like both Park & Ride as well as Park & Rail options will be available for concert goers!
I don’t see a park & rail option for fnb stadium. Must I be a little more patient or aren’t there going to be one? I know there was one for a previous rugby game.
Hi Amanda
There are both Park & Rail and Park & Ride options available for U2 at the FNB Stadium, although tickets for Park & Rail are not yet on sale right now. Go see our U2 Parking and Transport Plans post for the details – I’ll be adding to that post as new information is made.

Where can you purchase U2 360 shirts in Gauteng? I know you can get them on U2′s website.
Hi Renate
We’ve left requests for info with a couple of retailers. As soon as we hear from them we’ll let you know…
Thank you. I love your blog.
And we love you right back Renate! (In an entirely platonic online way of course Mr. Stewart).
Thank you for your support.
Hi there,
Was just wondering how the inner circle is going to work?? Do you have any more info???
Thanks. So EXCITED!!!!
Hi Lara! We’re pretty darn EXCITED around here too!
I working on an interesting post about making the most of your General Access tickets, including whatever info we’ve managed to find out about the Inner Circle at the moment.
Check back on the BlaBla Blog front page (www.blabla.co.za) soon for the post link.
Any news on Presale ticket supply. Mailed the Etx guys to no avail. They indicated they would NOT be mailing which is fine, but apparently some dude on teh radio has been sms’d that we gotta pick them up on the day of the concert at a turnstile XXX. Now that sucks big time. Its gonna be a disaster. Big Concerts are useless at distribution of something of this nature. Been to enough to know that they will take some serious strain on this. If anyone has better news, please rely.
Hi Derek
We’re tracking eTix related information on our post here: http://www.blabla.co.za/2011/01/25/feedback-from-etix-re-u2-pre-sale-tickets/
Check there for the latest.
Hi there.
I’m gonna be @ the U2 show in Jhb,I heard that Julius Malema wants people to boycott the show.I just wonder will it be safe around the stadium?
Now why would Juli Arse Malema want people to boycott a U2 concert? Does he have a problem with them not singing any songs in Pedi perhaps? Or maybe he’s grumpy that he didn’t get an invite to a Chivas and sushi stocked hospitality suite maybe?
Where did you hear this Henry? How reliable was the ‘teller of the tale’?
Regardless of what the loud one is blathering on about , there will be a lot of police and security in a ring around the stadium. There will be 110,000 U2 fans who will not be stopped from seeing a band they’ve waited years for. If anyone would need to be concerned about their safety I would think it needs to be Juli and any of his blind followers who feel the urge to try and stop the concert from happening.
I really hope that this won’t be a platform for political propaganda and racial slurs. I very much doubt that this would happen. It is probably a rumour started by people who have nothing better to do. Maybe people who didn’t get tickets and are now pretty pissed off
Think about those British tabloids before the world cup… people always start rumours and create fear before big events. If people had to believe every rumour or hoax email..you wouldn’t even leave your house. The show is gonna be super awesome and I cannot wait to PUT ON MY BOOTS!!
I think you’re quite right Lizelle. Anything for a little controversy.
We’ll be watching for those boots!!
hi
i paid R2700 at computicket for my golden ring tickets, you say thats a rip off, i see it diffrent…to get the best seats in the house to watch a R35 million production is a BARGAIN! and to watch U2 !!!!! wow
Hiya David
I never exactly said it was a ripoff at all actually. Heck, if I could have afforded it I would have been there in a flash.
What I was suggesting though is just that the price was well out of my reach as it stood. I only said that if they’d thrown in a couple of added extras it would have been a little easier to perhaps justify the purchase to my “bank manager”. For that price surely they could thrown a R50 parking voucher and a cheap t-shirt that said “I supported U2 and RED in Joburg”? There’s only 600-odd RZ tickets and it surely couldn’t have been too tricky to add a little more in for them?
Hi all, So how do we get to soccer city? Are there buses – or is it just parking? Your help would be appreciated! Bridget
Hi there Bridget
For the Joburg concert there are parking, Park & Ride and even Park & Rail options available. Parking near the stadium is obviously the most convenient option, but could be the most frustrating in terms of traffic, especially after the concert when everyone is trying to leave at the same time.
Please read our other post here: http://www.blabla.co.za/2011/01/24/u2-360-south-africa-concert-parking-transport-plans/ for the details and links (both in the article and in the comments below it too!)
HI Greg
I finally got that bus parking ticket from the computicket call center still not available from website the operator didnt know what was going on she called her supervisor and low and behold i got a ticket.
Morning Margaret! Good news indeed. And useful advice for others looking for bus parking tickets: Call the Computicket Call Center & speak to the Supervisor!
(I answered your other query regrading show times here: http://www.blabla.co.za/2011/01/24/u2-360-south-africa-concert-parking-transport-plans/#comment-6864 )
Camera that are allowed into the stadium… Please confirm as I have a consumer DSLR…
Please let me know
Bev
The official camera policy is described here: http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=122366664489997 add to that the note that:
It seems to be pretty standard to international events, and rather than risk having your only camera stopped at the security check I’d stick to something that is unquestionably a standard format point-and-click like that illustrated. I think that even people with fixed lens cameras that sort of look like a SLR/DSLR camera will be disappointed… In your case (I spotted your model on the Facebook page) I would say a definite no go.
Hi
I just received two suite tickets for Jhb (I don’t have the details yet). Does that mean seated tickets on the stand or in a box/suite somewhere?
What I think it means is that you should pass them on to me so that I can check if they are any good……I will in turn give you my really good seated tickets just so that you will have pease of mind…..
On a serious note, you might have landed yourself some seriously cool vip suite tickets…check and let us know so we can have a reason for being this shade of green.
Will do! let’s hope for the best
Hey,
Looking forward to the big event. What time will U2 be on stage?
Thanks!!
Hey Lee
Here’s the latest on show times posted by Big Concerts:
Please note running times for the U2 shows (the same in both cities):
16h30 – Doors Opened
19h15 – 19h45 Amadou & Mariam
19h45 – 20h00 Change over
20h00 – 20h30 Springbok Nude Girls
20h30 – 21h15 Change over
21h15 – 23h30 U2
It’s going to be a long, loud day! We can’t wait either!
Got two Field Standing tickets for Sunday 13 Feb in Jhb that I want to sell

So what time is everyone planning to go? I am so excited I cannot contain myself! Our U2 t-shirts that I ordered online arrived yesterday, perfect timing!! We have redzone tickets but are planning to go very early to make a day of it…
Does anyone know anything about the additional concert for Jhb? I believe it is in March and since I am unable to go to Sunday’s one I would really like to go to that one…
That’s definitely a new one for us here Darlene. Never heard that at all. Not even a rumour mentioned in passing.
Who or where did you hear this from?
Has anybody else heard anything like this at all?
Got the tickets, lower suite 74 ( so I guess we’re in a box?) cant wait!!!
Lekker fancy and larney ne Karlien?!! You sure you want to be seen hanging around here with us BlaBla commoners?
Definitely one of the hospitality suites by the sounds of things. You are going to have a jol wherever you are!
Rock that suite like a commoner for us Karlien! And send us a picture so that we can see how fancy it all is
Computicket website and the email from U2 360 degrees tour says that ticket collection for red zone ticket holders opens at 10.00 am on 13 February. The Big Concerts website says ticket collection for red zone ticket holders opens at noon. I am confused……which opening time is the correct one?
Yeah, Claudia, I noticed that “opens at 10am” messages as well. Personally, I wouldn’t stress too much about it. There are only 600-odd RedZone ticket holders, and you have dedicated enterances to the stadium and the RZ areas. Shouldn’t take you long to get into the stadium at all. In fact, if I was a RZ ticket holder, I’d be pretty chilled about the whole thing – as long as you have parking/park and ride sorted you should be good whenever you get to the stadium.
It’s gonna be a Beautiful Day!
Do you know where I can still get U2 360° concert merchandise in Johannesburg please. Looking for t-shirts and caps… Ta
Hi Momo
Sorry for taking so long to reply….
Here’s what we now about merchandise:
Whatever is available will go on sale from next Monday online at the suppliers site. Here’s the note from BC:
If you don’t manage to buy U2 goodies at the concert the left over merchandise will be available to purchase on http://www.thegreekmerchant.com/band/u2 from 8am on Monday 21st Feb until 5pm on Wednesday 23rd Feb (subject to availability).
Hello dear GREG & also everybody Crazy fans of U2 like ME ,
Greg i see you take much care in replying to everyone and it’s a great job. WOW, hats off man!!
I would be keen to have contact details of organisers or U2 agents etc as i really would wish to produce that group in Mauritius island.
Best sincere Regards,
Ruddy Krishna RAMASAMY
Hi Ruddy
First you cannot call U2 ‘that group’ – how can you call U2 ‘that group’!!! man r u a real U2 fan?? U2 is not ‘ that group’ – U2 is an identity not ‘that group’!!!! Second, I am from Mauritius and I came here specially in Jo’burg to attend the 360 degree show, because it was my dream to see U2!! You can think I am a rich mauritian, but no, i’m just the middle class who works to get what i need – i have nothing in excess….apart debts!! but i decided to realise my dream…& to pay the debts next month!!! And lastly…producing U2 in Mauritius…man…where did you get that idea from? I hope you have enough Millions to produce them in Mauritius…let’s be realistic…if you want to drink water..you can’t wait for the tap to get to you…you have to move your ass and go to the tap…like i did…but anyway…if it happens in Mauritius, I’ll be the first one to buy the VIP tickets…! Cheers…PS: If you want to see videos of the show, let me know!!
Valerie Malabar
Hi there Ruddy.
I think Valerie’s reply pretty much sums things up the way I see any possibility of U2 performing in Mauritius. Slim to no chance. But, there sure is no harm in trying I guess….
The international promoters for U2 concerts is a company called Live Nation. They are based in the USA, and ‘represent’ U2 (and other artists) in terms of their tour management and promotion. They would be the people I would contact first. You’ll find their contact details here: http://www.livenationentertainment.com/contact_us/
Good luck!! (And if you do actually manage to get U2 to perform on the island, remember where you got the information – I expect a fully-paid for trip to see them there!
)
Hi I would lIke to know if we are allowed to take any food and cooldrinks in to the stadium? Friday in Cape Town? Thanks a million.
according to their rules and regulations they won’t allow it but all depends on the security guard. We got our drinks and food through while we waited in the inner circle holding area. They did not really search our backpack. We said we had but its was water that was sold in the stadium so I think that’s why we got away with it. It was the 750ml Pump bottles.
Got red zone tickets for Cape Town event. Can anyone tell us what the red zone was like in JHB?
Hi Ilze, we had Redzone tickets for JHB and had an awesome time. At first we were disappointed that it was not in the inner circle but I feel it was totally worth every cent and our spot was perfect. We still went early and managed to stand in front which was absolutely fantastic. We didn’t really have a separate toilet as advertised but that’s not a big deal. We did have a small beer stand right by the area. Enjoy the show, If I could I would attend the Cape Town show as well…They ruined it for all other bands!!! Amazing amazing amazing…
My grandparents, together with my father was shot on their farm in Mpumalanga, my mother was raped in the process, 2 days after our South African Government announced that they see nothing wrong with the “Shoot the Boer” (Shoot the Farmer) traditional Zulu song that is being sung on national public gatherings (no matter WHAT you say, that is where it is being sung). And you have fuelled that notion. Now U2 comes to South Africa and claims the same on national publications in South Africa! Thank you U2. You are a disgrace to progress, reconciliation and peace in South Africa and a disgrace to Humanity. God only knows how many South Africans will die after your uninformed and naive comment. I hope you are proud of yourself ! ! ! ! ! You come to South Africa just to bag your money and leave the country in turmoil and confusion. Well done ! Enjoy your money! Stick to music and stay out of politics you don’t know anything about, especially the consequences ! I’ve torn up my tickets and will rather die than listen to U2 EVER again !
Hi there. First off my sympathies for your loss & condolences to you & your family.
However, I think you may be over exagerating the situation and reading much more into Bono’s words than what he actually said. My understanding is that the original article that appeared in your Sunday Times (which was picked up and quoted here in Australia) was a major piece of sensationalist nonsense with only selected bits of the actual conversation highlighted to give the impression that suited the papers’ rather inflammatory headlines and posters.
I think before you continue with your anti-U2 crusade you should at least research the topic in more detail and get another point of view or two as well. Once you’ve given a fair and open airing to ALL sides of the story and still feel the way you do then trash your tickets and break your U2 cd’s with pleasure. In fact Bono would probably encourage you to do the same IF you’ve honestly come to same decision – he’s always been big on people making their own minds up and acting on their convictions.
But that’s the key here: make up YOUR OWN mind. Don’t allow yourself to be guided by the tabloid sensationalism of one writer and one biased article.
Hello Ayantra
I’d like to second A-R’s condolences.
And I’d also like to express my support for your campaign of highlighting farm murders in South Africa. But that’s as far as it goes. Whilst I would never trivialise anyone’s tragedy, I do feel that the approach that you (and others supporting your campaign like Mr. Hofmeyer) are taking to the problem is somewhat blinkered and misguided. I feel that if you – and all other South Africans – spent as much time and energy focusing on the crime problems in our country as a whole you would have a far more favourable response not only from government, but more importantly, from average South Africans to your cause. As it stands at the moment, most of you come across as somewhat bigoted palefaces with an agenda that excludes most of the population of South Africa.
I hear the campaign suggesting that 3,500 white farmers have been murdered since 1994? Undeniably, this is a true tragedy and grave concern for all of us. But when considered in context of a total of (something like) 350,000 murders nationally in the same period I am pretty certain that we could identify other sub-groups that have suffered similar numbers of deaths – Zulu mine workers for example. Or is it perhaps a case that the other 99% of murders are of any less significance than the murder of white farmers?
My point simply is that the fervour and passion with which you express your dislike for U2 is not only misplaced, but somewhat narrow-minded. That you are basing this presumably recent dislike (else you wouldn’t have bought tickets to see them) on something as arbitrary as the mis-quoted and used out of context words of a rock star is a fundamentally flawed point.
You could, and should, be better applying this passion on an approach that might make a difference, especially if you took a more holistic and broader perspective of the crime problem that ALL South Africans are suffering from.

Hi, Ayantra
I’m really sorry to hear about the terrible farm attack against your parents and grandparents. I’ve seen way too many tears shed over innocent farmers, farming families and farm employees losing their lives to evil criminals. You have my deepest sympathies.
Regarding Bono’s original comments, after hearing the interview on the link below I feel that his original comments may have been incorrectly interpreted and reported by the media. As a media representative I know that we do make mistakes now and again in our reporting. I was also very concerned after reading the original reports in the papers, but after hearing the interview below my concerns have been allayed. I believe that Bono does have good intentions towards the people of South Africa and Africa and despises brutality against the innocent.
I urge you to listen to the radio interview and then to be able to make a more informed decision about your feelings on Bono and U2. Ultimately it is your decision.
Once again, please accept my sincerest sympathies regarding the attack that you mentioned.

I too am deeply saddened by your families loss. I do however feel is it important for a activist to have all the facts before jumping into a fire….
Please read the latest report and twitter feed by the honorable attention seeking Mr Hoffmeyer….. http://tinyurl.com/4bjuwl3
In case you missed it:
He certainly achieved the aim of highlighting his cause, but failed dismally at representing it very well. In fact, I think the ‘publicity stunt’ backfired terribly and caused more people to discount his opinions and views than ever before. And I still think he needs to be fined for littering!
Ayantra, as suggested by others, some more investigation on your part is called for.
We strongly recommend that you listen to the beginning of the radio interview that Bono gave yesterday. You could listen to the whole thing to get a clearer idea of what the man is all about, and a better picture of his character too, but if you really can’t stomach the man at all, at least the first thing that is addressed in the interview is what he said. Llyod listed the link in his comment above, and we also have the interview posted right here on BlaBla: http://www.blabla.co.za/2011/02/16/bono-talks-u2-justice-religion-music-family-having-fun-and-protest-songs/
And then, (and this is not an option if you are truely wanting to gain proper perspective here and make an informed and unbiased opinion) please read the ENTIRE article published here: http://www.thedailymaverick.co.za/article/2011-02-14-bono-malema-and-the-headlines-that-stirred-all-the-rage
It is a much better and more balanced report on the EXACT SAME meeting that the Sunday Times reported on. Also read the comments and responses below it, including the one from the ST Editor Ray Hartley and Mandy de Waals’ reply to him.
WHO WANTS TICKETS FOR CAPE TOWN ? I WILL BE WARMING UP AT THE WATERFRONT FOR THE SHOW FROM ABOUT 3O”CLOCK ON FRIDAY . COME AND GET IT FROM ME.
O
Would you throw in a flight as well??? Cause then I will buy the WARMERS……
Hey.
I was just wondering if you guys had any information on The Johannesburg U2 concert dvd? I have heard from various sources, newspapers included, that there will be a dvd of the concert made available but when I asked Big Concerts about it, they said they doubted it would be released.
Can you please let me know what you guys know about this.
I would love to get my hands on this dvd in any way possible to relieve this amazing experience. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks so much…
-Nicara (Durban, South Africa)
How awesome would that be!? To be honest though Nicara we’ve also only heard and seen the rumours, nothing definitive or verifiable at all. Which papers are reporting it? Bearing in mind that U2 related articles in the newspapers recently have been a little questionable to say the least!
I see that DSTV are doing a live AUDIO stream broadcast of the Cape Town concert, so it could be possible that they/MNet have cameras’ at the show as well. Perhaps they are filming for a television broadcast later? And maybe that broadcast will eventually get released on DVD? Lots of perhapses and maybes in the mix here though.
Be assured that if we hear or see anything more reliable we’ll post the info here first!
Hi Greg
Thanks so much for such a quick response.
I totally get what you’re saying about the reliability of the papers. The article that stated that a dvd would be released was the one on the front page of The Sunday Times.
Yes, I did here about the audio stream from the Cape Town show – should be great to listen in on.
I really do hope we’d be able to get a copy of the show though, even if it is just from a television broadcast – but any info of an actual dvd would be great when you get it.
Thanks again, and hope you have great day…
Anyone know how much the t-shits and caps are that are for sale, please
thank you
Hi Jolene
T-shirts I saw listed at R200 each. Caps no idea, sorry. I was still way back in the line at the merch stand when I gave up, but saw a couple of other people mention that the shirt quality was very good. Also, they were using those wireless speedpoint terminals at Joburg, but they kept failing more than working – cell signal around the stadium was not the best. It is definitely advisable to take sufficient cash with you!
Shirts – R200
Caps – R150
We also did not get at JHB concert because of the long queues. My cousin is going today to CT concert early to get for us.
Hi,
I have Vip parking for U2 cape town but I am wondering how on earth to actually get to the stadium with all the roads closed around the area. Do we just show metro cops / security the parking ticket to get access? Anyone know how this is going to work?
Spoke to BC on this and they weren’t reallly sure themselves.
Hi Scuba
That’s pretty much how it worked in Joburg – show your fancy VIP parking ticket to the coppers at the barricades and they should let you through okay.
Enjoy the show VIP!!
