In the conclusion to a case that has been running for almost two years now, North Gauteng High Court Judge Nkola Motata has eventually been found guilty of driving under the influence of alcohol.

This is the only charge that was upheld by the Johannesburg Magistrates Court earlier today. The Honourable Justice was acquitted of the more serious charges of resisting arrest and defeating the ends of justice.

Magistrate Desmond Nair told the court according to photographs submitted as evidence, Motata looked like a man asleep at the wheel.

Sentencing is to follow soon, but indications are that a relative slap on the wrist is probable. What remains to be seen is what actions will be taken against him by the Judicial Services Council.
