Ashtray Electric`s new album Measured in Falls will be released in June 2011. The new album will be launched with a nationwide tour in June/July, kicking off at The Assembly in Cape Town on Saturday 11 June.
Produced by Daryl Torr (the same man behind our favourite local album of last year, The Sick-Leaves’ Last Dance of the Sugarplum Fairies) Measured in Falls introduces a musical progression for the band. The new tracks (11 in all) are promised to be “warm, luscious, and extraordinary”. The album will also include their popular single “Release” (with Gazelle) as a bonus track. “Release” enjoyed high rotation on 5fm and national campus radio stations, and the video reached number 1 on the MK Video Charts.
Ashtray Electric first gallivanted onto the South African music scene three years ago with their debut album Bonjour receiving solid reviews from fans and media alike. Music journalist Atiyyah Khan commented at the time that “Ashtray Electric is in fashion. They most certainly ignite something electric on stage.”
Lyrically the new songs touch on the concept of truth and deception and the tools such as manipulation that come along with it. Says lead singer André Pienaar “With growing up, these are our closest everyday concepts that we deal with that define who we become or want to be.”
Baptized in angst by the creatures in my head, I’ll be honest this time. I swear.
- from “Angst”Because when direction’s never chosen, it’s just what fear tends to suggest. Then I’ll get it wrong with pleasure. I’m entitled to guess.
- from “Over and Over”
You kissed your own wetness now you’ve turned.
- from “Dear”
The album packaging promises an interesting approach as well. The cover shot features an image of the actual DNA strands of the four band members. Each band member had the inside of their cheeks swabbed and the DNA samples were then cut using a cocktail of enzymes and run in separate lanes on a Electrophoresis Gel giving rise to the 4 smears witnessed on the image. The broken bands in the 5th lane is a simple molecular weight marker.
The band (André Pienaar on vocals, guitar and keyboards, Rudi Cronjé on lead guitar and backing vocals, Regardt Nel on bass and backing vocals, and his brother Rupert Nel on drums) will launch the new album at a limited presale event at The Assembly in Cape Town on Saturday 11 June. A nine date mini- tour will follow in July to help promote the album. Measured in Falls will be available in both CD and Digital Download formats from then on as well.
